A Roman Holiday Feast
How to host your next gathering with High Style, Great Flavor, Little Effort, and Less Time.
The Holidays are right around the corner, and suddenly we are thinking about all the gatherings and events we will be hosting for family and friends and all the meals we will have to cook. After a few holidays tainted by Covid, we are excited about the season ahead and can’t wait to finally be able, with safety in mind, to celebrate with all our loved ones.
This year, I want to spend more time with family and friends and less time planning, shopping, prepping, and cooking. I do love to host a sit-down dinner, but sometimes it can get overwhelming with all there is to do, so I decided to host a different way this year.
Not willing to compromise on Style or Taste, I figured out a few things on how to create a delightful and inspiring presentation for my guests with minimal effort and time.

- Spreads: Green Pesto, Mix Mushroom Paste, Sweet pepper Bruschetta, Black Olive Tapenade.
- Cheeses: Parmesan, Bocconcini.
- Marinated/ Preserved Vegetables/Fruits: Sundried Tomatoes in Oil, Artichokes in Oil, Caperberries, Peranzane & Sicilian Olives.
- Beans: Canned Cannellini or Navy beans (With Olive Oil, Fennel Seeds, Dried Red Chili Pepper, Salt Flakes, Dried or fresh Lemon Zest).
- Nuts: Pistachios in Shell, Hazelnuts.
- Fruits: Red Grapes, Dried Figs, Fresh Figs.
- Fresh Herbs: Basil
- Sweets: Almond & Fig Tuscan Torta, Dark Chocolate w Hazelnut, Amaretti cookies, Cappuccino Biscotti, Mini Lemon Panettone.
- Sweet Spreads: Dulce de Leche, Fig Jam, Honey w/ Amaretto (add a few drops of the liquor to your honey: Heaven!!).
- Drinks: Prosecco, Limoncello.
Preparation
- Open the bean cans, rinse, and drain well. Mix the beans with the Olive oil, Fennel seeds, Chili Pepper, Salt flakes and Lemon zest. (You can use fresh or dried zest that you will have prepared a day before, so it has time to dry). Set aside.
- Drain the Bocconcini, mix with the sundried tomatoes, some olive oil, salt flakes, pepper, and basil. Set aside.
- Open all the jars, unpack all the dry food, and unwrap the cheese. Set aside.
- Wash any fresh food. Set aside.
- When ready, pour/place all the food in their designated plate, bowl, or board.
- Don’t forget to put your drinks to cool…
Voila!
You are done and ready!
Notes & Tips
- I used organic canned beans to go faster (which is the point of this spread), but feel free to cook your own beans from scratch a day in advance if you want.
- Also, if you don’t find fresh figs or basil, or on the opposite, if you want to add more fresh fruits, some fresh vegetables, and more fresh herbs, that would be great too. Remember, there are no rules here, just pure fun!!!
- If you have extra time, I like to mix a salad of arugula, fennel, radicchio, and basil with some olive oil and a balsamic vinegar to add some freshness and complete your spread perfectly.
- There are no specific quantities on purpose, as it depends on each crowd you will prepare this for. Perfect for two or 40 people….
