The Healing Power of the Senses
USING OUR FIVE SENSES TO HELP REJUVENATE OUR MIND, BODY & SOUL
From the time we get up in the morning to the moment we fall asleep
at night, our senses are constantly bombarded with information that can leave us emotionally exhausted.
Most of what comes our way is not by choice.
What we see, touch, smell, hear, and taste throughout the day directly impacts our wellbeing. Think of these daily irritants: the messy kitchen, the loud sirens, the outdoor drill, our phone ringing, the pollution on the streets, harsh lighting, the over perfumed person in the elevator, all the advertising coming at us, the stale morning meeting bagel, the pile of dirty laundry, the low but constant humming of the air purifier. The list goes on and on, and they keep adding up.
The good news is we can have relief from what we unconsciously absorbed throughout the day by intentionally engaging our senses to change our emotions.
Creating a specific area in our home where we can let go of everything, a safe space where we are comfortable, will help us disconnect from our day and reset our senses.
Being mindful of our five senses which are intricately connected to our memories and emotions, can help us engage in rituals that benefit our overall wellbeing.
The idea here is to create a bank of new memories to replace the undesired accumulated ones.
Sitting down comfortably in your sanctuary, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, allow yourself to be fully present, and start scanning your emotions.
How was your day? Hectic, Stressful, Challenging?…
How do you feel right now? Depleted, Worried, Angry, Sad?…
How do you want to feel? Relaxed, Uplifted, Calm, Inspired?…
What do you need at this very moment? Solitude, Love, Support?…
What image, aroma, flavor, sound, and touch can help you realign yourself?
These are just a few questions that you can ask yourself to help you identify all the irritants from your day.
From there, depending on what senses need a reset, it could be one or all of them; you can choose the visualization or action that feels healing to you.
The ideas that follow are just a starting point.
Feel free to add, in each category, more of what inspires and resonates with you.
Welcome to your Spa for the Senses, a conscious, holistic reset.
SIGHT
What image helps you reconnect to your true self?
LIGHTING: I always say …a dimmer goes a long way. Use some warm amber lightbulb for the perfect skin glow. Lower the light for an instant cozy Hygge mood.
EYEMASK: To blackout the world around you. Give a rest to your eyes from all the lights, electronic screens, and stimulations. Perfect for the ultimate relaxing meditation.
COFFEE TABLE BOOK: Enjoy the beautiful imagery that can transport you far away. Let your imagination run free, and if you feel creative, write your own script.
ART: Surround yourself with pieces of art that you love. Take a moment to look at them genuinely. Dive into their world.
FIREPLACE: Let yourself be hypnotized by the dancing flames. (multi-sensory: sight-smell-hearing). No fireplace? No problem! Use a fireplace video and light a pine candle.
COLOR THERAPY: Soothing and calming, certain shades of Green and Blue remind us of nature. On the opposite, Yellow, Orange, and Pink are bright and warm colors with an uplifting effect that can make us feel optimistic and happy.
SMELL
What scent makes you feel cozy?
ESSENTIAL OILS: In a diffuser, essential oils can have powerful healing benefits. (Always use organic and wildcrafted ones. Avoid synthetic ones). No diffuser, a candle, or incense can work too. The candle flame is also a great focal point for open-eyed meditation.
Calming-Relaxing-Soothing-Reassuring-Replenishing: Clary Sage, Lavender, Geranium, Dill, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Sweet Thyme, Magnolia.
Uplifting-Revitalizing-Stimulating-Energizing-Motivating-Invigorating: Linden Blossom, Neroli, Coriander, Ginger, Lemongrass, Spearmint, Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Oregano, Fir Balsam, Grand White Pine, Cypress.
Grounding, Warming, Meditative, Sensual: Patchouli, Clove, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Vetiver, Cardamom, Tonka Beans, Labdanum, Palo Santo, Rose Attar, Ylang, Sandalwood
Heart Opening: Rose Otto.
Aromatherapy combined with a Cardiac Coherence Breathing Practice can help rebalance our emotions, alleviate our stress and anxiety levels, reduce our sleep disorders, risk of depression and burnout, and reinforce our immune system.
HEARING
What sound soothes/spark your soul?
NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: For blissful silence, listen to your favorite podcasts, calming meditations, or dance like no one’s watching on your favorite playlist.
WATER FOUNTAIN: Connect with the calming, purifying, and healing power of water.
BELL & WIND CHIME: Their sound is uplifting. It can help raise our vibrations, increase creativity, remove negative energies, even help with feelings of depression.
WELLNESS APPS: Choose soothing sounds of nature; the rain, the ocean, the wind. They can change our brain waves, leading us to a state of complete relaxation.
TASTE
What food brings up delicious memories?
Taste is a complex amalgam, perceived by the tongue, smell, texture, and temperature. Social and emotional components are linked to memories and time spent sharing meals or childhood favorite foods.
Here are a few ideas for light, healthy snacks:
SWEET: Dates with nut butter, Carrots, Mango, Roasted and seasoned Chickpeas.
SOUR: Greek Yogurt, Kombucha.
SALTY: Olives, Veggie Chips.
BITTER: 100% Chocolate, Green Tea with Citrus Peel, Coffee.
SAVORY/UMAMI: Seaweed Chips, Miso broth with Tamari & Mushrooms, Steamed Edamame, Aged Cheese (Parmesan, Cheddar, Comté).
TOUCH
What feels healing to your body?
Easily overlooked, the sense of touch can play an essential role in our wellbeing. Hugging and touching are known to decrease the stress hormone Cortisol. A handshake, a pat on the back, a hug have all been missing in the last few years.
Texture and temperature can also play a role in our unwinding session.
MASSAGE: Getting a massage can be relaxing or stimulating, depending on your needs. No appointments available? Self-massage is a good option. Try massaging your hands and feet, two areas of our body often neglected.
CASHMERE THROW: Wrapping yourself in a soft blanket can feel like a cocoon.
RUG: A plush carpet for our feet…
TEMPERATURE: Using an electric blanket or hot water bottle to raise our temperature or sleeping in a cold bedroom for a good night’s rest.
TEXTURE: Petting our favorite furry friend. Molding Clay. Kneading dough. Playing in the garden. Feeling the bark of a tree. Building sandcastles on the beach.
Adding these rituals, morning, or night, will build better awareness of your senses and help you reset your emotions to rejuvenate your Mind, Body & Soul.
